Warsaw Ghetto Uprising

warsaw-ghetto-uprisingThis week sees the 65th anniversary of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising. I am lucky enough to have had the privilege to do quite a bit of research on the Uprising over the past week. I was given a call by Fakt, a Polish tabloid to head the translation team responsible for the translation of a commemorative English-language booklet which is set to be distributed around the world.

The booklet sets out the history of the Uprising and includes opinions from Gordon Brown, Lech Kaczyński, Donald Tusk, Marek Edelman, José Maria Aznar, Hans-Gert Poettering, Lech Wałęsa and many others. I’d like to share with you all some choice quotations taken from the afore-mentioned people concerning the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising and the Holocaust…

“Despite their defeat, against overwhelming odds, the Heroes of the Ghetto Uprising were ultimately victorious because they managed to preserve their freedom and dignity, and their ideals eventually prevailed”. Gordon Brown

“Words that cannot depict the loneliness of the dying and the pain of those who miraculously survived seem equally inadequate when we try to express our respect and our gratitude”. Lech Kaczyński

“I would like the memory of these German crimes not to eclipse another message. Poland is not just a cemetery to the Jewish nation. It is important to remember that many years ago, the Jews that were driven out of other European countries were able to find safe asylum here. A vivid Jewish culture once blossomed and thrived in Poland for over a hundred years”. Donald Tusk

“Our greatest defeat was the fact that the world turned its back on us. Both the West and the East said nothing and did nothing”. Marek Edelman

“Warsaw, tainted by history, has always made us aware that our freedom and safety always depend on others, that nobody should remain indifferent when other people’s rights are violated”. José Maria Aznar

“It is our responsibility and obligation to fight absolutely all manifestations of extremism, racism, xenophobia and anti-Semitism”. Hans-Gert Poettering

“This time around, Europeans must draw the right conclusions. This is why we must remind everyone of the Uprising. Lech Wałęsa

Let us not forget them…

  1. Sean Groth says:

The uprising was hopeless and no doubt those involved knew or suspected so. Its great triumph was not its success but as a yardstick for defiance. They fought as we hope we also would.

THE WARSAW UPRISING REMINDS ME OF MASADA. AND I PRAY GOD NEVER AGAIN. THE LEON URIS BOOK MILA 18 DESCRIBES THE COURAGE OF THE WARSAW FIGHTERS. IT IS AN UNFORGETABLE BOOK.

  3. The up rising is not old……
