Lovely Ladies

Viva Magazine has announced its Najpiękniejsi 2008 competition where readers have the chance to vote on the most beautiful men and women in Polish show business. I thought I’d take a peek and come up with my own Top Ten Polish women, partly based on the Viva Top 25 list but also based on my own tastes and those women that seem to be in the news, on TV and in the media a lot of the time. Here are the ten sexiest and most beautiful women in Polish showbiz (in no particular order):

Edyta Górniak, singer:

Two more from my personal list of Polskie media hotness: Marzena Slupkowska (weather lady) and Alicja Bachleda-Curus (whence her career? anyone seen her in the media lately?). Ania P’s always been one of my faves too. Mrrr. 😉

If I wuz you, I’d like to start a proper discussion about Doda; is her image a good or bad model for Polish (young) women? Has she, um, whored herself to the undeniable top of the Polish media pile by means of her image alone? Or does she have any actual discernible acting or musical talent? Re. Madonna: no-one will deny that her self-presentation (and infinite variations thereupon) has kept her in the top rank of stars for 25 years, but some of her records & films do have undeniable merit. Can we say the same of la diva Rabczewska?

    Discuss. 😉

I last saw Alicja B-C at the European Film Awards in Berlin and was actually introduced to her. Very nice lady.

As for Doda, she hasn’t got the worst voice in the world. I’m not a fan but I can’t deny she can hold a tune together and, most conspicuously, she is a gorgeous minx. I’ve seen her in the flesh – small and perfectly formed, although she wears far too much make-up for someone so pretty. Is she a good image? Probably not. The sad thing is that there’s no one else waiting in the wings…

Here’s a doctoral thesis for someone; ‘The Virgin/Whore Dichotomy in Polish Popular Culture’. On the one hand, Jopek, Steczkowska, (even the once-‘radical’ Chylinska!) et al., who are safely married and maternal, prominent in the ladies’ glossies as good examples of motherhood; on the other, ‘bad’ girls à la Doda, Przybylska etc. Either one or the other, the classic pre-feminist double-bind, even though most modern Polish women (like most women in Western cultures) don’t fit easily into either of those categories.

And whither the great-grandma of post-1989 Polish pop culture, Edyta G? As far as I can see, her irregular appearances in the media seem to be lumped into either one or the other of those categories, no hint of a more nuanced portrayal.

Ah, how nice it is to swirl around in a bath of fluff in these serious times! 🙂

  4. Raf Uzar says:

Tee hee! Life isn’t a bath of swirling fluff?

  5. Peeky James says:

Edyta Gorniak and Justyna Steczkowska are the most delicious creatures ever! Nice post!

  6. Peeky James says:

And Dorota the weather girl is a nice surprise!

It’s interesting how different is the taste among people. However there is some pattern of beauty that most of the people accept. The popularity of Marta Żmuda-Trzebiatowska is an example of that. We didn’t saw her in many productions, but we like her. Why? Because of her physical appearance that’s somehow is accepted by most of us.

Masculine example? Brad Pitt or Polish actor – Maciej Zakościelny. But here probably I will not have possibility to compare my taste with the author of this blog.

  8. Raf Uzar says:

    Kate,
The aesthetics of beauty is a fascinating subject in itself – take Umberto Eco’s “History of Beauty”. You won’t have the possibility to compare? Why not? What do YOU find attractive?

  9. Emilia says:

I think that you have forgotten about other beautiful ladies, such as Kasia Glinka, Anna Mucha, Socha. I agree with you on Edyta, Anna and Marta, but Justyna? No! She has nothing about herself that could actually attract anyones attention to be hoonest with you. She is just so full of herself! Bu then again it is a matter of personal oppinion.
